The first two years of the PhD Programme focus on interdisciplinary coursework, with an emphasis on core management disciplines such as economics, behavioural sciences, and research methodology. Many classes are video-conferenced across campuses, offering a unique two-continent learning experience. Students also experience the two-campus structure through a mandatory campus exchange between Singapore and France.
The academic year is divided into five eight-week periods, with dedicated time for exams, research, and reflection. Coursework includes a mix of projects and exams, while the summer is primarily devoted to independent study. All instruction is conducted in English.
The PhD Programme includes core courses required for all specialisations, providing a strong academic foundation. Beyond these, each specialisation has its own set of requirements that students must fulfill to qualify in their chosen field.
In exceptional cases, candidates with extensive prior knowledge may be exempt from specific courses. When exemptions are granted, alternative coursework is typically assigned to ensure a well-rounded academic experience.
The second year marks a shift to original research, highlighted by the second-year research paper—a single-authored work with publication potential. Students select a topic and faculty advisor early in the year and complete a draft by summer under close faculty guidance. The paper is presented to faculty and evaluated by two INSEAD professors, receiving a pass or fail grade.
The comprehensive exam assesses the breadth and depth of knowledge gained during the first two years of coursework. While the format varies by specialisation, it typically includes both written and oral components.
The PhD Committee, comprising faculty from all specialisations, evaluates whether students who have fulfilled the first two years' requirements—coursework, comprehensive exam, and research paper—demonstrate the potential to conduct scholarly research and complete a dissertation. Successful candidates are then approved for full PhD candidacy.
Upon PhD candidacy, students begin defining their research topic with faculty guidance and form a Dissertation Committee of at least four members, including three INSEAD resident faculty. Under the supervision of an advisor, students develop a dissertation proposal outlining the research topic and methodology. Approval of the proposal is required to advance to the fourth year, with most students completing their dissertations by the fifth year.
The dissertation marks the culmination of the PhD journey, showcasing original, publishable research. Students typically submit their work in the fourth or fifth year. Approval to defend must first be granted by the Dissertation Committee, followed by an oral defense open to INSEAD faculty and PhD students. After the defense, the committee reviews and recommends any revisions. Once completed, final approval is submitted to the PhD Committee, which recommends the degree award to the Academic Director. This rigorous process upholds the high standards of the INSEAD PhD in Management.
Upon the PhD Committee’s recommendation, the Academic Director awards the degree on behalf of the INSEAD faculty. The degree is conferred under INSEAD’s name and authority at the year-end ceremony—a special occasion for graduates to celebrate with family, friends, faculty, and colleagues before embarking on their next career journey.
